Hmm. I presume you've checked all the grounds and they're all good,  
and there's power going into the ignition module when you're cranking  
on the starter.

If the tachometer is electronic, disconnect it as a test.

VFRs have always been extremely popular in the San Francisco Bay Area  
so I wouldn't be surprised if there were several local salvage yards  
that had parts like this available. A google search for '"cycle  
salvage" santa clara' in this area brings up too many possibles to  
list here, give it a shot.

You might also research what other models used the same ignition  
control module as your '86 VFR to broaden the search. These are often  
standard components re-used with a number of different models and  
pricing often varies by the model ... The part numbers might be  
slightly different, often they're exactly the same. VFRs are  
considered a high end bike, market pricing wise, and parts for VFRs  
often carry a hefty premium, particularly for 750cc models in that  
time period.

You might also look for aftermarket suppliers of ignition units for  
the model.
