Ah! Thought of that just before you posted it! But that's not it. However... I seemed to have identified the gremlin: An open-circuit pulse generator (sends crank-position info to the ignition computer). There are two of them, one for each cylinder bank, so you'd expect a failure to affect only two cylinders. But the shop manual lists a single failure under the "No spark from all cylinders" section of the troubleshooting section so I hypothesize that the ignition is programmed not to run at all if one pulse generator is out.
