No, it's not pointless.  But the conclusions that people are coming to 
are quite wrong.

More like when a customer goes into a store and wants to special order 
the lens they are told they must pay for it up-front because the store 
cannot sell it if the customer does not buy it.  Customer balks, lens 
is never ordered.

Last time I saw Pentax Canada's catalog, it still listed a great many 
A-series lenses that they had in stock that had been out of production 
for more than a decade.

Why would you have to order it to find out the price?  Any store that 
tells you such a thing is idiotic and is trying to lose your sale.  
What store told you that?  All they have to do is call or e-mail their 
local Pentax distributor, who may have to call or e-mail Japan if they 
don't have stock locally to check on availability.

The FA 50mm f1.7 was cheaper than the FA 50mm f1.4 but around the same 
price as the F 50mm f1.4 when I checked in March.  I didn't consider 
the 1.7 because of that.
