The Canon service people are good. Unlikely they are lying. That doesn't mean an independent repairman can't fix it, though. Canon's service techs have to do things by the book. An independent may know short cuts or unauthorized fixes that work. Reminds me of back in the day when I did my own car repair. If I followed the official shop manual's instructions to pull the engine out for service it would take 30 hours to do a ring job. But I could do it in an unauthorized way without taking the engine out of the car in about three hours. So it certainly wouldn't hurt to have an independent take a look at it when you get it back. Did it get dunked in fresh water or salt water? Did you immediately take the battery out? (ALWAYS do that if a camera gets dunked.)
