Hi Ann,

Just use the camera in manual mode, just like your older pentax cameras. 
Stop down to the aperture you want to use, tap the AE-L button, and the
camera will set the shutter speed and set the exposure properly.  There's a
DOF preview lever as well (which was not available on a number of manual
cameras) which, when used, can not only show the DOF, but also shows if the
exposure you set is over/under and by how much.
