I don't know how Dave does it. I catalog the PEF/DNG files with iView
MediaPro, which has a feature to export the files in a catalog as
JPEG. What it's doing is extracting the JPEG preview files from RAW
files of any kind.

I shoot RAW only.
As part of my "workflow" I routinely extract the embedded .jpg when I
download the files from the card. These I use for reviewing images,
doing Q&D trial edits or emailing snaps to family & friends.
