You can do some tests with it and see how well it works. There are no rights and wrongs, really. Whatever gives you the picture you want is the right thing for you.

I gave up on umbrellas in the late 70s and have used softboxes ever since. They give me the look I want. I still have a few umbrellas hanging around my studio "just in case", but can remember the last time I unfurled one.
