It definitely matters perception-wise, I would think. If I was a non-Pentax
owner in the market for a D200 competitor, and Pentax had a competitive
offering, the next thing I would look at was available lenses. I probably
would be fooled into thinking I could just buy anyone of them off the shelf
at any time.

Exactly! And the thing is these relatively inexpensive lenses should never
be 'off the shelf' if there is a demand. Pentax shooting themselves in
the foot again. They're likely creating a continous cycle of customer
frustration.
I don't think you could expect these lenses to be in stock on permanent
basis. Pentax only sells the *istD's at present and there cannot be much
demand for more exotic glass. The *istD's aren't very impressive anyway and
I cannot imagine than many without Pentax lenses are buying them. Lenses
that are natural partners for the *istD seems to be available everywhere;
even the Limiteds. When Pentax release the D200 competitor the lens line-up
availability certanly need to be better. But as to right now I don't think
it matter for that many.
