Another big advantage of the dual layer discs is 
they can hold a longer and/or higher quality
version of a movie in video mode without the
need to physically change discs (long interrupt
compared to just a layer change) in the middle
of the film due to this higher storacy capacity.

If you're willing to go with an external, the LaCie external drive that 
sells for around $250 will do double layer DVD burns as well as single, 
so you can store over 8 gig on a single disc. I haven't been using the 
double layer discs because they're more than twice as expensive, but I 
hope the price eventually drops. It's 16X of course.
