There would be little point in producing a 50-220 f4 when there is already a 50-200 f4-5.6. Nor would such a lens merit the term "high performance".
Apart from superior image quality, reason good enough in my opinion, a "full frame" FA D lens may be able to utilize in body image stabilization. My guess is that IS won't work with DA lenses.
