Most prople in the US are employed "at will". There is next to no recourse. An employer can just not like the way I look, or I can piss someone off once, or someone could tell my boss a story about me that's been exaggerated and is only a half-truth... and I'm gone.

I can then decide to put my existing resources into A) suing my former employer in court or B) finding another job.

Yes, re wrongful dismissal, so it's unlikely the store owner would fire him.
Although I suppose if they wanted to they could find another just cause.
