Hey! This has been my trouble all along... forgetting to set focus mode to
manual... since I was using a MF lens to begin with, I wouldn't have
noticed the change in feel when focussing.

That seems to have been the problem. I noticed that the camera would fire
normally when the focus indicator light came on, but not if the indicator
didn't light up. You completed the last par of the puzzle ... sometimes
there's just too much to think about with these cameras. Thanks a lot,
