I never liked the split-screen "focusing" aid.

Same here. I've swapped out the screens of all my SLR cameras for plain matte fresnel focusing screens since I started taking using an SLR in 1968.

And, do the focus confirmation lights light up even when you're using a MF lens?

With the *ist D the if you set the body to AF, and use a MF lens, the focus confirmation lights work. (I only used the center one, so I don't know if the others work with MF lenses).

On the DS, the focus confirmation indicator works regardless of what position the AF-MF switch is in, it only blocks the shutter release in the AF position, however. Also, only the center focus sensor is available with manual focus lenses. (A custom function allows focus indication with Pentax screw mount lenses too, but I don't have any to test this out with.)

My testing seems to demonstrate that the focus indication is sufficiently accurate for lenses up to about f/2.8-3.5 wide open. I don't rely upon it for critical focus, however; the focusing screen is good and I have no problem focusing f/1.4 lenses and wide lenses (even the DA14) very accurately. If you have difficulty with critical focus, I recommend the 2x Magnifier FB.
