I think - at least for starters - the AA Lithiums seem a good way to go, at least based on comments here. Inexpensive, no maintenance, ubiquitous, reasonably good life. After using them for a while a change may be indicated, but certainly while learning the DS I'd want to keep other aspects of its use simple and uncomplicated.
