Definitely use available light. ISO 1600 with the *ist D/DS is quite clean, particularly if you use RAW format and do your own rendering into RGB. I generally get much better results with the DS and ISO 1600, particularly for color work, than I see with film.

I do recommend RAW format for this kind of stuff. Stage lighting is often quite contrasty: with RAW conversion processing, you can do a lot to mitigate that contrast. Use the spot metering mode and try to keep the highlights from getting burned out.

If I stick with my best primes and RAW do you think
I can get acceptable quality at ISO 1600?
Or should I keep the ISO down and take the 500FTZ?
Typical stage lighting, 4x6 to 8x10 prints.

Comments/Opinions appreciated.
