Mark, I had troubles early on with my *ist D. Sometimes I'd put the card in the card reader but there were no files visible. Put the card back in the camera & there they were. I ended up using PC Inspector Smart Recovery to recover the images.
I find that if I don't format the card after downloading the files, I have intermittent problems with corrupted & invisible data.
