David, it sounds like a problem with your *istD,or the particular card 
you're using.  I have only formatted my 512 MB card twice, and that was 
after doing a firmware upgrade, and have never yet (touch wood) lost either 
files or parts of files.  However, I've probably not downloaded as many 
times as most in this group, as I'm as yet only up to some 1400 shots!

I had troubles early on with my *ist D. Sometimes I'd put the card in
the card reader but there were no files visible. Put the card back in
the camera & there they were.  I ended up using  PC Inspector Smart
Recovery to recover the images.
I find that if I don't format the card after downloading the files, I
have intermittent  problems with corrupted & invisible data.
