Subject: OT: Strobes - has anyone got a strobe outfit with a single generator?
I just want to know if this is the way to go? I only do portraits (groups or single) and product shots. Which brands are prefered?
I use a box and cable set-up (Photogenic Photomaster) which is a single power pack and flash heads strung to it with cables.
I've used mono lights, and when it came time to buy my own set of lights I went to a single box.
Advantages of monolights are primarily in redundancy. If you blow a "powerpack" with monolights, that light is dead, and you adjust your lighting strategy with the other lights to compensate.
With a box and cable, blowing a power pack means it's time to go home, unless you have a back up box.
The advantage of monolights is that all your controls are in one place (this has been addressed by some monolight makers who have remote control options for their kits), and light weight equipment on the light stands.
I almost got my head taken off by a 600WS Bowens that got knocked over in the studio one day.
I can't say enough good about the Photogenic lights, although I expect you would go for one of the European brands.
