Is it possible to use unmounted film with a slide duplicator?

and, how easy is it to control the magnification?

It would be interesting to use the istD to quickly "scan" B&W film.
Has anyone tried such thing?

I can't speak for the physical kit necessary to make photos of negatives and slides, but this past summer, I did an experiment. I found a bunch of negatives from the last roll of film I ever shot with my Minolta, and had never had prints made from (it was broken, and I was shooting test shots to see how far "off" the shutter speeds were... In the end, however, the shutter just died completely.) While doing that, I decided to see what would happen if I also shot digital images of prints and slides. Since you asked about this, I put up three sample images on my web site. At least you can get an idea of how these things might look. I think the results probably speak for themselves. At least to me they say, "this is ok for occasional use, but not for high quality work." :-)

Granted, I did use a 3mp digicam, but I had the negative and slide mere centimeters from the lens. I was actually surprised at some of the detail I got (the texture on the man's sweater, including the dust, for instance) but the truth is, it's nothing like what even my 1800 dpi film scanner was able to produce.) :-(
