I have just been "scanning" some old slides for my brother, also using a
Nikon 990 and a Pentax slide copier.  I still have a dozen to crop and
clean up.  Digital spotting is sure easier than doing it with a brush but
still a pain with about 50 dusty old slides that will not brush/blow clean.
 Here is one of the better ones originally taken with his K1000 and cleaned
up in PhotoShop.

With the right lens the ist D should be able do twice as good a job. I'm
hoping to find an inexpensive screw mount macro to use with my extension tubes.

I have changed the light source since then. 
The slide copier was sold with the "Pentax Bellows II" which I don't have.
It will also handle negative strips.
