locking the mirror up until you change the shutter speed to one that is useable.

Yes, people on bikes race on an ice rink. They spend hours inserting screws into their tires, pointy side out, then go race in ice.
It's quite a fun event, attracting couriers from as far away as Montreal and Ottawa (they're places in Canada).
I'm there with my LX (for the short zoom and 19mm) and the MX (for the long zoom). First thing I noticed, being the first time I've fired off the LX and MX at the same session is how much louder the LX is. Wow. Big difference. I also notice that I really don't like switching between two different bodies in a situation like that, because there's that momentary adjustment ("which body do I have again?") that I find awkward.
So, it starts snowing. Pretty hard actually. No problems, except I've got to wipe off the lenses quite often.
Then, after about 3 hours on the ice (the temp was probably just below freezing), the LX's mirror sticks up. It won't go down. The shutter has closed, but the mirror stays up. I press the "mirror down" button of the MLU, and nothing. Then, I move the shutter speed dial from Auto, hit the "mirror down" button, and down it comes.
Go inside to maybe warm up the camera a bit, go out, happens again. So, after I get the mirror down a second time, I shoot manual, and it's fine.
Whew!
After the race, there's a party. I'm trying out Neopan 1600 (pushed to 3200) as sort of a test for next week's concert that I want to shoot. I'm shooting the LX on Auto, and it's fine. Mirror comes down every time. So, I relax, and drink more beer than I should (but not so much that I'm hung over this morning).
Even though it wasn't ~that~ cold out, I'm thinking the cold may have had something to do with this mirror problem. Has this ever happened to anyone else?
