I'm not sure, but I think the lithium batteries can
withstand the cold better than the silver ones ...

Loudness of LX .... <LOL>  Y'really have to hear them
side-by-side to get a good understanding of the difference.

I know what you mean about the "telephoto" guys.  Not that
they may not get some good shots, but being in close really
gives the viewer a better sense of being there.  And there's
something very neat about using wide lenses up close to the
action.  Getting down low, like lying on the ice, can
produce some spectacular results.  Most people don't want to
get dirty, wet, or be inconvenienced in any way, when making
photos.

BTW, I often carry an old "space blanket" in the car, for
just those times when getting on the ground is desirable.
