I wonder why everybody thinks, I said that digital is not here to stay. If you don't think digital cameras are a fad how do you explain the idea of a digital disposable camera. Does it make any economic sense at all. Maybe in a few years it will be cheaper to produce than a film disposable, but right now it only makes sense from the digital mania point of view. That is, by my definition, a fad.
The problem seems to be that some of you think that only something that is useless and cheap can be a fad. That is not true. SUVs are a fad right now. They are expensive and useful, but most of the people buying them have no need what so ever for their capabilities. At one time mini-vans were a fad, and before that full-size vans. Look down the block, how many new vans do you see today? There are two kinds of people buying them today. Those that need their capabilities. And those who always wanted one. No one is buying one to impress their neighbors these days. Digital is a technical advance that is here to stay, but still, at this moment in time it is a fad. When the fad dies down, there will only be a few companies making them, and sales will be fairly steady, instead of growing exponentially. People who have been on this list for awhile, will remember, when the MZ-D was announce, I was one of the few who said there was a market for such expensive digital cameras. I was poo-pooed all over the place. Now those same people are on the front of the digital bandwagon, and Canon is selling more digital cameras that cost $8000 each than they can make. No one needs to convince me digital is here to stay. But I think many of you need to soak you heads in ice water until you can see reality when it stares you in the face, one way or the other. Please think, rather than just react.
