We're not talking point-and-shoots here. This is serious stuff. And,
hardly a fad.
The lowest price level of ANYthing new succombs to faddish marketing and
the fast buck, but there's room for that too.
But the upper level, where the Oly and yes Canon effort shines, is top
quality gear, and top quality performance.
I don't see how anyone can look at performance like that above and call
it anything else.

Film won't go away. Nor will all the tons of cameras and equipment using
and supporting film uses. 
Just because digital exists is no reason to relegate film cameras and
the film industry to oblivion. It just won't happen.
Those film advocates who have been digital bashing will eventually have
to admit the time is almost here for 35mm and possibly even 120 film
quality matching.
Arrived almost 5 years before I figured it would...

It will eventually stand side by side with film. Film for this, digital
for that. Just like water seeking it's own level...
