Yes Jeff, I know many others also holding off on Vista until SP1. And with the big memory footprint of Vista, or rather it's 4 gb sweet spot <groan>, I will hold off for quite some time as XP Pro is supported for a good while still. Perhaps when you do buy a replacement you could ask for XP as the OS, some are doing this.

I forgot to ask before, but has the laptop ever been dropped or jostled roughly recently? Even accidentally dropping it an inch onto a hard surface after looking underneath can be damaging to internal components, ie. battery connectors, video, network, etc. I am always amazed how much the little things can be huge for a laptop.

Thanks Peter. I did not get the extended warranty.
I was considering a replacement laptop, but was waiting for the first SP of
Vista.

Jeff, it sounds like the hard drive is failing. A relative with a similar model had the hard drive fail and experienced these things beforehand.

Is it still under warranty with HP?

I have a ZV5000 pavilion.
Every once in a while, the unit will just shut off, the programs never
close. When I turn it on, it takes a very long boot time. I never wait
long
enough, I just do a hard power down, then restart after it cools. The next
time it starts fine.

I've noticed lately the fans seem to run a lot faster at times which makes
me think this is a heat related issue, but maybe not. It never used to be
like this. It's a big pain as the programs never close so my work is not
saved.
This laptop is about 2 years old.
Does anyeone have any ideas?
Thank you
Jeff
