I'm not convinced it's the hard drive but Peter sounds like he has had some experience with this. Laptop hard drives are really easy to replace and with all the faster drives for laptops coming out the older drives are really reasonable. If you have restore cd's then that may be an option for you if you can confirm that's the problem.
