I agree with Hugh -- you don't need to buy much software, if any. But I gather, from discussions on various forums, that you are likely to have software problems with Vista at first while the software makers scramble to come up with versions that are compatible with Vista.
For instance Adobe Reader claims to be compatible with Vista, but somebody was complaining that it crashed his computer every time he tried to load it. I suggested he try Foxit (no relation to Firefox!) and it works fine for him. It's also a much slimmer, faster program. A lot of folks don't even realize that there are various PDF readers available. So there are probably alternatives to anything that won't work for you. And I suppose that problem will resolve itself in time. Just one of the reasons I'm holding off on buying Vista. Good old Win 98 is serving me well.
