The only reason to use TB is to stop Spam. I get a lot of email, and my
address has been around for several years, yet my Spam is limited to a
very few each week. You'll find that TB is eliminating a lot of Spam
even before you train it.
Read through the other features listed on this page:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/
Look under "Tools" for the junk mail controls. The settings should be
obvious.
1.The biggest hidden secret in Windows is the right-click menu. If you
don't know what to do in a given situation, just right-click the object
in question and you'll usually find an appropriate choice. In this case,
just right-click the Inbox folder and select "New Folder".
2. Most Windows programs have a "View" menu to change the appearance of
a program. Look at the available options tofind a layout you like.
3.You're right that most Windows users are creatures of habit, and
usually bad habits at that. We buy $30,000.00 cars and never look at the
manuals, and the same with computers. A brief tour of the Tutorials or
help indexes included with most programs would save us all a lot of
frustration and provide a background for conquering the next new
program, but most help menus go unused.
The single coolest thing about TB is that it's Open Source, which means
that the source code is open to the public, unlike MS' proprietary
programs, so real users have an opportunity to make improvements. Look
under the tools menu for extensions and themes that add functionality
and change the appearance. If you're a Firefox user, you'll find
extensions under Tools/Add ons.
Check out the Calendar extension for TB. Very handy.

Hello again,
I didn't realize that Thunderbird is a different email window (like Outlook
Express is an email window). I'd like you (I suppose Hugh Vandervoort) to get
me started on it because just looking at it now, and looking at the different
options, I find OE to be more comfortable. For example:
1. In Thunderbird, I don't see any access to the various folders (Outbox,
Deleted, Sent, Drafts) or anyway of creating folders.
2. I don't see a "Preview" button available (that's good for deleting an email
without opening it up if so warranted).
I think many computer users become creatures of habit and settle into
browsers, email applications, ISP's, maintenance programs, word processors,
and even Notepad substitutes (like I think Hugh likes "1st Page" and I like
"Notepad Plus") and so it probably is with Thunderbird vs. Outlook Express.
I like the idea that Thundbird can be "trained" to remove certain email that
the recipient labels as junk. Other than that, I don't know why I would want
to change. I'm sure Nos. 1 & 2 above can be achieved. Please let me know how
Thunderbird is an improvement over OE and then I, and maybe others, can decide
how it fits into our needs, abilities, and personal preferences. And now, back
to the Twilight Zone marathon. --- Harold
