Simply uninstall xorg-video. That should be possible and then you should be able to install any nvidia driver.

That's the state the workstation is in right now.

nvidia-580 is installed, but xorg-video is not.

Based upon the steps in our documentation and the idiom that most people
seem to use when switching versions of the nvidia driver, I had assumed
that re-installing xorg-video after switching to a different nvidia
version was required to make to make Xorg server work.

If Xorg server and lightdm should work *without* xorg-video installed,
I'll proceed with testing that.

xorg-video is just a meta package that ensures that a couple of other packages get installed.
You should look at its sources.
