This card should be supported by the driver/graphics/nvidia-580 driver
too (currently at 580.159.4).  So maybe it is worth trying it to see if
there is any difference.

Thanks Marcel, I appreciate the response.

Based upon Andreas' comments in his response, I'm considering trying an
older copy of the text install.  If I do, I'll try the nvidia-580 instead
of nvidia latest, assuming I can figure out how to install components
*without* doing a full update.

I've been using OI hipster a long time, so I understand the rolling
release nature and the intent that everything is updated rather than
picking and choosing just components to update.  In this case, though,
for testing I'll want to install components that are not latest.

sudo pkg refresh

sudo pkg uninstall xorg-video nvidia
sudo pkg install xorg-video nvidia-580

.. and reboot.
