I don't think they are completely orthogonal, as "allow multiple links going to the same port"'s behavior is to implicitly union the data on those links together. On the original proposal, "allow multiple links going to the same port", actually extending on this example, if we change the Union to Join or Diff, which has dependency between input ports, how to schedule this workflow?
