Back in the late 90s (I think it was, maybe early 2000s), some company was
laying new fiber from Nashville down the US231 corridor to Huntsville. You
couldn't miss the mess they made in the hills south of Shelbyville. I
forget who it was at the time (Bluestar maybe?), but I heard it never went
anywhere. Then not long after it had been more or less completed, I heard
it from a reliable source that Google had bought it all up, and that they
were quietly doing so all around the country with grand plans at some
point to spring it into action. I guess this is part of that plan now over
a decade later, and it makes sense that Nashville would be a candidate
based on what I heard back then. What I know about it is 2nd or 3rd hand
no doubt, but it does fit the mold. This could be a real game changer for
the likes of Comcast and might be part of what spurned the Comcast/TW
proposed merger. Sounds sweet to me!

I thought that Fresno, CA (where I live now) is on the top 10 of that
list. Now looking at the map it's a huge void there instead of a pin...
Ok, after some search there was a big churn in the news about this:

http://www.fresno.gov/News/PressReleases/2011/GoogleFiber.htm

etc.

Fast residential service is actually the least important thing about
Google Fiber coming to Nashville. The business potential this will create,
particularly within health care (which is Nashville's biggest industry),
could easily impact every person who works in technology around this city.
Faster Netflix streaming is nice but we should also be thinking about it
from the standpoint of how our employers might want to exploit the
opportunity, or even how we as technologists might exploit it from an
entrepreneurial standpoint.

I'm (sort of) with Jack. I'm actually close enough to Clarksville to get
Charter. But I'm very lucky in that. People one road away from me don't
have cable, and can't get it. I wish I thought Google Fiber in Nashville
would do me any good. It won't, but I'm pulling for you guys anyhow.
