We are planning to move the most commonly used tasks from nantcontrib to nant. I posted a list of the tasks to be moved and where they would go some time ago. We should be able to move that process along for the 0.84 release.

Ian

This has been debated many times. The bottom line, as I recall, has
always been that the NAnt project team doesn't want to be responsible
for the quality or reliability of all of the items in NAntContrib until
they have been thoroughly tested and refactored. On the other hand, the
Nant project teams doesn't want to make it extremely difficult to have
tasks enter the process. So, NantContrib was born to be a place that
new born tasks could be added, and as they because more solid and
commonly used, they could migrate into the core of Nant.

While there may be some contrib tasks that many people use as core,
there are and always will be a few that are niche tasks.

Erv,

I think what Cash is asking is the same thing I proposed a week or two
ago: solve the NAntContrib problem by merging the projects and
obsolescing the contrib project completely. The NAntContrib tasks are
*core* to what most of us use NAnt for anyway! Just move all the
NAntContrib tasks into the mainline NAnt source before streeting 1.0.

I have attempted and failed a couple times to build NAntContrib from the
sources I downloaded from cvs. There are no released files for the
project. There have been no nightly builds since June 03. There's no
traffic on either the user or developer lists to speak of; the last post
to the dev list was July 30. It seems prima facie an abandoned project
sans-maintainer and with no community or activity.

Some of us would like to help (okay, maybe just me), because there are
weirdities or bugs (such as in the SQL task's verboseness) but it seems
pointless to submit patches if nobody's listening who cares or can do
anything about it.

All of the NantContrib tasks are included as binaries in the Nant

0.8.3

release (look in the .\nant-0.8.3.50105\bin\ subdirectory of the

release

.zip file).

Get it here:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/nant/nant-0.8.3.zip?download

If you want to build it from scratch or if you want to follow the

latest

CVS versions, you'll have more work to do yourself.

Sorry if it is annoying to pursue this NAntcontrib thing here. I know

this is the NAnt group. But the NAntcontrib mail list looks useless.

However, there is a relationship between the two even if it should be one way (NAntcontrib to NAnt). This relationship is made very clear

in

this thread of messages. In order to round off NAnt for "Corporate"
use, certain functionality is needed but not seen as 'necessary' for NAnt core. SQL, VSS and have been mentioned in this thread and the response is "it's in NAntcontrib". So, the functionality of

NAntcontrib

is recognized for the "corporate" success of NAnt.

However, it seems that NAntcontrib is not very assessable. (I may be wrong.
Someone please prove me wrong!) I can't seem to download a ZIP file
and
just use it the way I can NAnt. While, if I have to, I suppose I can decide to make the leap to become CVS junkie and figure out exactly

what

I need to do to download, this seems unnecessary AND contrary to the accessibility objectives for the Corporate Target. I feel like I'm having to jump through hoops to use the thing. (And from the emails I

see, I know it's not just
me.)

Maybe the objective of getting "Corporate" buyin is more of an

atherial

experience than a real objective. But if NAnt is to become a real

tool

with real buyin in the .Net development community then this bridge has

to built.

Either the necessary components from NAntcontrib should be brought

into

NAnt where it can be properly packaged or the NAntcontrib needs to be made more assesible.

Thanks, Cash

Sorry no. Binaries for NAntcontrib ship as part of the 0.83 release however.

Ian

Is the NAntContrib with 0.83 available for ZIP download?

The files section is empty

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=54790

and the "nightly build" is very old.

http://nantcontrib.sourceforge.net/builds/

NAntContrib binaries ship with the 0.83 release. Unless you have to

be

using the latest cvs version of NAnt they should work fine.
