Thanks for the suggestion! However I don’t want to deal with all those
different platforms and distribution channels. That’s like what
developing was in the eighties, the golden age of home computers, and
that’s what the web set out to change.
I understand and agree. I don't want to have to redevelop the same app
for multiple, incompatible platforms either.
On the other hand, Cordova (and Google Play) are similar to the FxOS Web
APIs (and Firefox Marketplace): a set of non-standard technologies (and
a distribution channel) for running (and distributing) web apps on a
different platform.
And although it takes some effort, the work required to support Android
using Cordova (and distribute an app on Google Play) is roughly similar
to the effort required to support FxOS using its Web APIs (and
distribute the app on Firefox Marketplace).
I develop web apps, some of which I make available through Firefox
Marketplace. One can hope that eventually there will be a
W3C standardized TCP Socket API. I don’t want to go back.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any active effort to standardize a TCP
socket API.
The System Applications Working Group <https://www.w3.org/2012/sysapps/>
worked on a TCP and UDP Socket API
<https://www.w3.org/TR/tcp-udp-sockets/>, but that group has closed, and
that API is no longer being worked on.
