Hi Joe,
Are you still in the UK? I think you were supposed to do your thesis
review?
Using Ubuntu install unison-gtk(GTK+ version, there is a CLI version if
you prefer. The GTK+ version is easier to use in my opinion). You will
need to install the same version on both the machines you would like to
sync. You will also need to install ssh if it is not installed yet. Once
installed you will find unison under the Applications -> Accessories
Menu. The first time you run you will have just a default profile, I
always set this up to sync my whole /home/alan folder. Double clicking
on the default profile will start the setup process.(Very important that
the other machine to be synced is fully started also) this will open a
profile setup window. Select ssh as the method to be used for
synchronisation. Now just enter the path to the folder to be synced on
the other machine(it must be the same as the other machine, if you leave
it empty it will automatically default to the same folder). Enter the
machine name(example: alan-notebook) and username the other text boxes
may be left empty. Close the window and now you will get some kind of
warning(as it is the first time you are syncing and the other machine is
not known yet) ignore and continue. You will then be prompted to enter
the password for the other machine. If everything went well at this
point unison will start the process of comparing the files between the
two machines and deciding which need to be synced. This will take a very
long time for the home folder so I suggest that you create another
profile specifically to sync your thunderbird mail folders. Just click
Create new profile in the unison window and go through the setup process
once again and give the new profile a name which will help you identify
it in the future. Enter all the required details as above this time
focusing directly on the thunderbird mail folder(unison can handle
hidden files and folders easily just include the . in front when
defining the path). Once again enter the password and the comparison
process will start, once complete you can refine the synchronisation by
making changes to the list of files. When ready hit go and after a short
while you should be synchronised.
I'm not sure if it will work with thunderbird. I can tell you that it
does not work with evolution mail folders however having said that
thunderbird uses a simpler and more straight forward mail storage
structure. Sorry the explanation above may not compare exactly to what
you will actually see but I wrote the whole thing from memory. I am sure
you will figure things out.
Best Regards,
Alan.
