Try using the ping command. First, ping your ISP's DNS server (you can find 
the IP address in /etc/resolv.conf while you're connected). If you can ping 
the DNS, try pinging a server by name - the ping command should at least tell 
you the IP address.

If these don't work, as root type the command "route". It should give you a 
list of IP addresses. Paste it in a message so we can work out what's going 
on. Also, the file /var/log/messages should contain information from the pptp 
process at the very end, just after connecting. This too might give you a 
clue to what's going in.

Note that if you've got an Alcatel Speedtouch Home modem (not the USB 
variety), in reality you've got the Pro model - all it takes is a little 
hacking and your modem becomes a gateway, firewall and router, and you won't 
have to connect via Linux or Windows any more - you just set the modem as 
your gateway and you're always connected. There's a link in the ADSL article 
on the website about it.
