John C, your message was too long so it bounced. Here it is, and my reply...

Thanks for replying, but I think I should rephrase the question:
From the console, if I try to launch an X program with or without X
running, I get a 'cannot open display' error (or something similar).
What I do to get round this is launch a window manager, run an xterm,
and type in the command there. What I want to know is: is there a way of
doing it from the console (not a console in X; the REAL console)? Some
way of directing the output to the X server? Does this have anyting tp
do with the $DISPLAY variable? And if so, what would I have to set it
to?

Thanks,
John C.

If X is not running, from the console type "startx". This should launch
XWindows with some initial application(s). You can control which applications
are launched at startup by editing the file .xinitrc in your home directory.
This is a shell script in which you can type commands to be launched
immediately after XWindows starts up. Alternatively, type "xinit xterm" which
should launch XWindows with xterm as an initial application. Check the man
pages for xinit and startx.
