Could someone please explain something to me quickly:
I have X installed and operational on my Linux system, but I don't know =
how to start programs in X. When I type "X" or "startx" I get the server =
loaded, but obviously it's useless without any apps. I don't know how to =
get into an xterm, so I try running apps from the command line - but =
when I do this I get "cannot open display" errors. I know what I have to =
do is get them to open through the X server, but I'm not sure how. I =
read in the readme for Afterstep WM I could type:
echo "exec afterstep" > ~/.xinitrc
I tried it (not as root) and nothing much happened. No errors or =
anything, but also no window manager. My X server (alt-F7) remained =
blank. What exactly is "xinitrc"? What other ways are there of starting =
programs in/through X?
The only way I know of is starting kdm and choosing one of the window =
managers from there, but I want something more versatile (and less =
cumbersome) than kdm.
Thanks,
John C.
