GPG (and the other one, PGP) is really nothing more than a framework around
cryptography algorithms and the OpenPGP standard. The application isn't what
needs to be strong (although it needs to be implemented correctly to be
safe.) You will get strong encryption (and authenticity, and so forth) from
it through the use of algorithms it supports. It's a good option.
