Thanks. I also had to find that the right keypress is then ^D but it
worked.
Did the newfs(8) and fstab(5) and now fixing the user settings.
But if this is a 'one-off' partitioning exercise, why not just use the
interactive interface to disklabel instead:
# disklabel -E wd1
Because I've already used it quite a lot, while writing the disk
tab in this format was a new exercise.
