I would also suggest using cygwin as a base, as it is more up to date than
the old msys fork. I would also suggest looking at the original MSYS patches
to the cygwin code, bound to be useful stuff in there.

I would also take a look at msysgit: they patched msys code to allow for a
newer version of perl (5.8 vs 5.6), and perhaps some other stuff too.
