Scott, You actually don't lose the halo effect, it just comes in as lots of copies of the original text (if you use *.wmf that is), with the top one black (or whatever the original colour) and about 12 below in white, each offset a bit to create the halo effect. If you can select them all and then group them within Word or Powerpoint (I prefer Powerpoint as it preserves angled text when you play with the details) you can then move them wherever you want.
