I've pretty much given up on GNOME. I've been looking at cinnamon. There is a version in cauldron which I'm hoping will make it in post-mageia3, and I've been keeping that updated with cinnamon development.
Also, I've found that one bottleneck with packagers is that the mentors are often overloaded.
