I saw the discussion going in to areas of "the ReadMemory API could behave differently", and I wanted to note that I'm hoping to start a proposal on changing these API, and that would be a good opportunity to make changes like those because I'll probably need to update all the callers across the codebase if we find a new API design we can all agree on.
