Well size is not your biggest issue, that is going to be device and HD space
for storage. Honestly I'd look at one of the so-called nettop computers for
that. Perhaps a Dell Studio system.

How much space do you need?

What OS's are going to be using it?

How much traffic day-to-day are you expecting?

I am using an old tower for my needs running Ubuntu Server. Using Samba for
file sharing or sftp if I am connecting with a Linux box running Gnome.

I also run a bittorrent service for remote Transmission that works well too.

If you are buying new harware try a Mac Mini and use its built in FTP
capabilities. Mac OSX is very out-of-the-box.

Does anyone have any experience building their own ftp server for use
on a hoem network? I would like to build a small headless server
(remote login) for file storage.

I would like the project to be small (2x shoebox sized if possible) so
what hardware would be recommended?
I have experience using debian/gentoo systems; which of these two do
people find "best" for a server?

Thanks in advance.
