'mask' was the wrong word to use here. I am aware that the toolchain 
will use the full host path to /tools i.e., '/mnt/lfs/tools' (and so, 
--with-local-prefix=/tools also becomes important). All I really meant 
is that the system is configured such that it is expecting your logical 
system root to be equal to '$LFS' or '/mnt/lfs' and so will be 
explicitly searching there for the rest of the toolchain components.
