I would prefer fixing this in master and leaving it up to the packagers to apply the patch or not to the current stable release. AFAIK the stable branch was left too far behind. I have nothing against a release it's just that I don't really have much time to participate right now and releasing from stable seems a waste of time. But if someone steps up to handle the release (announcements/tarball) I'm for it.
