That's fair, just thinking if this is an "exploratory" installation it could be
worth trying that out, but you might want to be more conservative if you're
already down the path of getting that machine setup for work.

Does the same thing happen with drag-and-drops as well? If so, is it possible
that your mouse, or some other piece of hardware, is somehow periodically
sending a scancode that's getting interpreted as Esc while holding down the
button? (Very much an "out there" theory but since the effect looks like what
happens if you press Esc while drag and dropping, thought it might be worth a
cursory check at least)

I've seen some pretty daring package manager switching play out on distribution
forums!
