Those were good questions. Unfortunately for me but fortunately for you, [my
installation died after an upgrade today][1].

If I don't see this on my new installation, I'll close the issue. If I do, I'll
check what you wanted me to check. I'll try to reinstall on known-good
installation media this time, because I can't think of any other commonality
between my installations except what I installed them with.
