No, that does not sound acceptable. If the new field has a default, I think
that we should have a default in the API rather than a comment. The argument to
_not_ do that (both your 1 & 2) seems to be that having a default somehow makes
this a breaking change, which @snazy argues above is not the case. I agree with
that.
